Integrating Biobehavioral and Sociocultural Research to Prevent HIV Transmission and Infection (R01) [NICHD added] Open to non-US citizens

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits Research Project (R01) grant applications from applicant organizations to develop theoretically grounded approaches to prevention of HIV infection and transmission that incorporate biobehavioral approaches in studies that are culturally appropriate. Biobehavioral approaches may be biomedical, or they may consist of behavioral interventions using biological markers of efficacy. Sociocultural appropriateness involves, at minimum, application of knowledge of the norms, beliefs and values of potential research subjects in varied contexts, and an appreciation of culture as dynamic. It is anticipated that such knowledge will improve both the quality and applicability of research among the diverse populations affected by the pandemic, in the US or abroad. Intervention and pre-intervention studies are welcomed, but descriptive ethnographic and epidemiological research is still needed in some areas. For example, descriptive research may delineate the impact of cultural variables on behaviors that impede or promote biological markers (e.g., seroconversion), lead to a better understanding of ethical concerns in biomedical preventive studies, or may illuminate as yet unrecognized issues concerned with adherence to a prevention interventions. Intervention studies should evaluate the efficacy of biomedical interventions, or of behavioral interventions that also use biological variables, in light of the sociocultural context.

Interventions for Suicidal Youth

The Institutes invite research grant applications to study interventions to reduce suicidal behaviors in youth. Although youth suicidal behavior has been recognized as a significant public health problem for several decades, there are few effective treatments or preventive interventions that have been developed and specifically tested to reduce suicidal behavior in youth. The purpose of this announcement is to support efforts to develop and test such interventions that build on both risk and protective factors. This PA identifies the need to test the effectiveness of interventions for reducing suicidal behavior from a number of approaches, ranging from broad-based community or school-based prevention efforts, to more targeted approaches that reduce suicidal behavior in youth with identified mental disorders or substance use disorders (SUD).

Research on Interventions for Child Abuse and Neglect (R01)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits research project grant (R01) applications focused on conducting efficacy and effectiveness trials of child abuse and neglect interventions. Specifically, this FOA solicits grant applications that include various levels of interventions. For those interventions that need preliminary research, applicants should consider additional mechanisms, which are used to establish efficacy, including the R21 and R34, as appropriate. However, given the public health need for children and families who experience the negative effects of child abuse and neglect, interventions in which preliminary developmental/exploratory work has already been undertaken, and pilot studies, or in some cases efficacy trials, have demonstrated positive change are strongly encouraged for R01 grant applications under this FOA. Of particular interest is the development of large scale trials designed to target either or both the victims or perpetrators of child abuse and neglect, including preventive interventions. Child abuse and neglect is a complex public health issue likely caused by a myriad of factors, including individual-, family-, and community-level elements. Thus, a research program focused on understanding and addressing these problems must necessarily draw upon interdisciplinary theories and approaches. One of the goals of this FOA is to bring together multi-disciplinary and translational perspectives encompassing basic biomedical, behavioral and social science research in mental health, physical health, public health and prevention, alcohol and substance abuse, neurology, injury, trauma and child development, to advance our knowledge of child abuse and neglect. Only projects proposing rigorous scientific research designs will be considered; service demonstrations or other types of service programs are not eligible for funding under this FOA.
